As a father (and proud new grandfather!), military veteran, attorney, business owner, church leader, and service organization member, Jared is devoted to his community and has had the distinct honor to meet and serve individuals with varying needs across many backgrounds.
Jared has been practicing law for 17 years and has gained valuable experience in criminal, civil, and administrative law. Throughout his career, he has served as a prosecutor, defense attorney, City attorney, and in private practice. Jared has earned an outstanding reputation as a conscientious and honest attorney, which are values he will bring to the bench if elected.
Jared served active duty in the United States Air Force Judge Advocate General's Corps for over 6 years where he gained significant litigation experience and advised Air Force leaders, service members, and others in a variety of issues including criminal justice, contract law, personal disputes, and administrative law.
In 2011, Jared transferred to the Air Force Reserves and he and his family moved to Walla Walla, where he joined the law firm of Virtual In-House Counsel. In 2014, he purchased and re-named the firm to Hawkins Law, where he continues to serve his valued clients in multiple practice areas. He regularly represents individuals, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government entities such as a local Port district, a local Metropolitan Planning Organization, and a local Park & Recreation District, and he currently serves as the City attorney for two small cities.
In his military reserve capacity, he has frequently served as an Art. 32 Officer to evaluate felony-level military criminal cases (similar to a grand jury’s role in federal criminal court) and has presided over administrative discharge proceedings in a quasi-judicial role.
Jared recognizes the rehabilitative limitations of the traditional legal system and sees the value in pursuing alternative treatment options/therapeutic courts (e.g, drug courts, mental health courts, veteran's treatment courts, etc.) in Walla Walla County. He believes that addressing some of the root causes of crime, such as mental illness and addiction, can help reduce the chances of re-offending and make our community a safer place to live. He has been actively working as a member of the Walla Walla County Veterans' Relief Advisory Board to evaluate establishing a Veteran's Treatment Court in Walla Walla County.
Jared has a great working relationship with the presiding District Court Judge. They have discussed what the District Court is already doing to explore these programs and, if elected, Jared intends to take an active role in the implementation of such courts where feasible.
Commitment to Service
Service is a core principle in Jared's life. He proudly served our country while on active duty overseas and continues to serve annual military duty as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force Reserves.
He devotes his time and talents to multiple community organizations, such as the Rotary Club, the Walla Walla County Veterans' Relief Advisory Board, the Blue Mountain Action Council Volunteer Attorney Program, and other various local nonprofit organizations. He also regularly serves an active role as a volunteer leader in his church congregation and its faith community within the surrounding region. In his spare time, you may find him coaching his daughter's soccer team or leading groups of teens and youth on wilderness explorations.
Jared, his wife Elise, and their children are proud to call Walla Walla home and look forward to continuing to serve the community for many years to come.
